The Union Ice Company was formed as a coalition of smaller ice companies in 1882. The company has operated under several owners since its inception. During the 1940's refrigeration technology advanced and it became cost effective to provide refrigeration to individual households. This technology had a drastic impact on the ice industry and the company. The Union Ice Company refocused its direction towards refrigerated warehousing to match the changing demand. Today, warehousing is the primary focus of its business, although Union Ice remains the second largest ice producer in Southern California.
